Things Selectors Look While Selecting National Cricket Team Squad

Cricket selector meetings are mostly full of controversies. In every club that puts up more than one team, there is always a fringe player who splits the committee. This holds more truth if there are youngsters involved who are looking to get their first chance in playing XI.

Former West Indies batter and current national team selector Desmond Haynes believes that he chooses players as per their talent and what kind of character the particular player possesses.

You look at the character of the players, you look at the way they’re committed to training and cricket in general. Obviously, knowledge of the game is very important for me as it allows me to make sure that the players understand the game and are students of the game. Also talent, at the end of the day. If someone wants to play cricket at the highest level, their talent has got to be able to produce and do well for the West Indies,” he quoted in an interview to Betway.

There are certain aspects that selectors look into while selecting the national cricket team squad, we have listed them in the article below –

    • Runs or wickets – This is the most obvious thing that each selector would look for in a player, whether they have scored enough runs or taken many wickets to be in the playing XI. Even if the player has other qualities in place, without enough runs or wickets, there is very less chance for them to get selected in the playing team.
    • Technique – Once you have runs or wickets in place, the selectors would look out at your technique while playing the game. You can get through with a bad technique in your school’s team but that is not the case with the national cricket team squad. This is because, with a good technique, there is a higher chance that your performance will improve in the coming years. Thus, apart from scoring well or taking more wickets, it is equally important that the given player has some good technique.
    • Commitment – You might be a talented player, but your chances won’t look good if you are not committed to the game. For example, a player might say that he wants to do well but is not available when required, this is taken as a commitment issue. Now, the selectors understand that not everybody is available for all the games but they should make some effort to be available and grab on the better chances.
    • Passion – The desire to make it to the top, and then not giving up attitude is very important. The journey of all the players would not be the same. So if you are facing a downhill journey in your career, it is essential that you do not give up hope. Anyone would want to select a passionate player, who desires to take himself and the team to the top, even when things might be going wrong.
    • Fielding – One thing that is never ignored while selecting anyone is their quality as a fielder. The team always requires good fielders, and even if you fail at your main skill (batting and bowling), you can still be in the team by being a good fielder.
    • Fitness – To be on the national cricket team squad, your fitness level should be at its peak. Even though some players with exceptional skills might get selected sometimes even if they do not have the desired level of fitness but if their opponent is fitter with similar skills, then things would get really challenging for them. It is important that you have good core strength and power, which will reduce the chances of fatigue and injury.
