Father of Indian Renewable Industry Tulsi Tanti passes away

INDIA: Tulsi Tanti, often regarded as the Father of the Indian Renewable Industry, passed away at the age of 64. He was popularly known as the visionary who pioneered the Renewable revolution in India as the founder of Suzlon Energy Limited.

Tanti was responsible for revolutionizing the concept of renewable energy in India with his insight, commercial acumen, and hard work.

He was known for his gigantic aspirations, of such epic proportions, that they could be fructified when Suzlon became the leading renewable energy company not only in India but also abroad with a slew of acquisitions.

A firm believer in creating sustainable businesses and economies through energy independence and security, Tulsi Tanti was a visionary and world-renowned expert on clean energy and also champions the cause of affordable and sustainable energy.

Tulsi Tanti spearheaded the wind revolution in India with the founding of Suzlon Energy in 1995. He envisioned the opportunity in the Indian renewable energy industry at a time when the global wind energy market was dominated by international players and characterized by expensive and complicated technologies that were largely unviable for traditional businesses.

Instituting a new business model, he conceptualized the end-to-end solution to create realistic avenues for businesses to ‘Go Green’ and thus emerged as a strategic partner in developing sustainable businesses.

India transitioned from a fossil fuel nation to a renewable energy nation—thanks to the lion’s share of Tulsibhai as he was popularly known. It’s no surprise that many consider him the “Father of Indian renewable Industry” – the guy who foresaw the future.

Tulsibhai burst into the league of billionaires on October 19, 2005, when Suzlon Energy, which was held 70% by him, was listed at a 35% premium valuing the company at INR13,850 crore.

He has often been credited for bringing renewable energy to the agenda of the nation.

In March 2006, Suzlon was ranked fifth globally as a manufacturer of wind turbines and had a 50% share of the Indian market. The company is engaged in two prominent businesses — manufacturing wind turbine generators and providing operations and maintenance services.
