PUNE: Dr. Atul Gaikwad, Director of Coaching, at the Sikkim Cricket Association, has been named as the head coach of the North East Zone team, for the prestigious Duleep Trophy, which has been reintroduced after a three-season gap.
The Duleep Trophy, to be played in the zonal format, will take place in Tamil Nadu from September 8-25, with Coimbatore slated to host the final from September 21.
Gaikwad will coach the North East Zone, which will take part in the coveted tournament, for the first time.
The Sikkim Cricket Association (SCA) congratulated Gaikwad for their responsibility.
“I on behalf of Sikkim Cricket Association would like to congratulate and give our best wishes on your selection as the coach of the North East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, to be held in Chennai from 5th of September, 2022. Sikkim Cricket Association is proud of your appointment,” SCA secretary Tshewang Lama Bhutia wrote in a letter penned to Dr. Gaikwad.
Under Gaikwad’s guidance, the team has already assembled in Dimapur for a short conditioning camp.
Dr. Gaikwad, who is a certified level-three high-performance coach from Bengaluru-based National Cricket Academy, said, “This is a huge opportunity for me and also for the players from the North East, who will be rubbing shoulders with seasoned players. I look forward to guiding the boys in this tournament.”
A former Assistant Head of Education, BCCI, Dr. Gaikwad has more than 30 years of coaching experience with an intimate understanding of sports science, principles of human movement, mental toughness, coaching, and teaching techniques.
He is the first Indian coach to be an England Cricket Board Level 4 Master Coach besides being a Certified Yogic Science Teacher and an NLP Certified Trainer. He has also served as an assistant coach for India Women’s team and as a coach at NCA for various skills since 2005.
