5 Ways the Citizens of North East India Make the Region Even Better

Each year, North East India attracts numerous tourists, from all over the world, to its humble abode. All the eight states that the North East comprises, are beautiful and unique in their own way. Home to so many medal-winning athletes, the North East has always been making Indians proud. The weather and the greenery of the North East and its polite citizens welcome tourists with open hearts. Although a trip to the North East can be tricky because with eight states, comes a lot of territories to cover. North East India tour packages help you with a carefully planned trip and take care of all the messy steps for you. Open your heart to this elegant piece of India as you step further into the destinations that are famous all over the world, for their uniqueness. It is not just the scenic beauty of the states that makes them so appealing. But several cultures and the way the citizens live and how they take care of their home, their region, and their community, makes the North East such an appealing place to visit. Here are five ways the citizens of North East India make the region even better.

    1.      Going Cashless

Located in the middle of Loktak, the largest freshwater lake in North East India is a small lake island named Karang. It is India’s first cashless island. The people decided to contribute to the government’s vision of a cashless India and became an example for the rest of the country to follow. It is really inspiring for a small lake island to go cashless like this, as they had no banking services available on the island. The citizens of Karang took the first step and the rest of the country just needs to follow.

    2.      No Dowry in the North East

If you are from the west, this concept may sound strange to you. But in dowry, the bride’s family gives the groom’s family some amount of money for the marriage. Although dowry is illegal in India, it is still practiced in many parts of the country and causes problems in a lot of marriages. In many cases, less money in dowry even results in domestic abuse. But the polite and humble people of the North East separate themselves from this horrid practice. The whole North East is dowry free and avoids all the unnecessary chaos, setting a great example for the rest of the country.

    3.      Cleanest Village in Asia

Littering is a huge problem in India but the North East is comparatively clean. Tawang, a district in Arunachal Pradesh is crowned as the cleanest district of the North East, and Mawlynnong, a village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya is awarded as the cleanest village in Asia. So, not only does it beat the rest of India in its cleanliness, but also the rest of the countries in Asia. The villagers manage the waste in a productive manner and take care of the graceful nature of the village. And thus, people affectionately call it God’s Own Garden.

    4.      Culture of the Khasi community

This one might be a little different from the rest of the world but it is absolutely pleasing. Where the rest of the world asks women to move in with their husbands after marriage, in the Khasi community, men leave their homes to live with their wives’ families. This culture of the Khasi community of Meghalaya is definitely opposite to what happens in the rest of the world and that is what makes it so unique. It is good to see a community exists, where a woman does not have to make all the sacrifices after marriage.

    5.      World’s First Organic State

North-East India as a whole is more organic when compared to the rest of the country, with considerably less chemical consumption. But in 2003, Sikkim stopped its imports of chemical fertilizers and became the first state, in the whole world, that is fully organic. North East India does wonders for the environment and Sikkim became a famous example for people all over the world, to produce less waste and protect our mother nature. States like Uttarakhand and Tripura were also inspired by Sikkim and set similar targets for themselves.
