AWS is supporting startups in Pune to succeed through cost optimization solutions

INDIA: Amazon Web Services, the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud offering, today hosted a media briefing on how AWS is helping startups to manage their cloud costs and the benefit of these strategies for startups in Pune. The event was chaired by Kumar Raghavan, Head, AWS Startups India, Amazon Internet Services Private Limited. Mandar Nilange, Head of Product and Technology, Fittr, and Anil Sinha, Chief Technology Officer, EarlySalary, participated in the session.

The burgeoning startup ecosystem in Pune

Forming the third largest startup ecosystem globally, India’s startups accelerate GDP growth, provide jobs, and are a catalyst for innovation. With many incubators, early-stage investing, and mentoring, Pune is one of the prime startup epicenters. Beginning its journey in this area with a handful of startups, the city today houses over 3200 startups across sectors like health-tech, agritech, edtech, and automotive.

Maharashtra’s innovative startup policy aims to create 500,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The policy will facilitate startups by making the regulatory environment more conducive, providing suitable assistance, and enabling access to industry practitioners and mentors for a vibrant ecosystem.

Kumara Raghavan, Head, AWS Startups India, Amazon Internet Services PrivateLimited said, “Pune is the next global startup destination city of India and is making its mark in the Indian startup ecosystem. Through a host of AWS cost optimization solutions, we enable startups to reduce their technology spending and build a robust, cost-optimized cloud architecture early on, so they are ready as they scale their business and maximize their funding resources in the early days. We are excited to collaborate with the startups in Pune and expect to expand our network further to fuel innovation in the city.”

AWS is committed to supporting startups to succeed

Since 2006, AWS has worked alongside hundreds of thousands of founders all over the globe, supporting them in building and scaling their businesses. AWS offers a broad range of programs and initiatives to support startups at every stage of their lifecycle.

AWS helps startups unleash their full potential so that they can build and innovate faster, experiment more with lesser risk, and be more agile. Working closely with leading VCs, incubators, and the partner ecosystem, AWS is enabling services that pack robust security with high productivity and performance.

The cost-effective nature of the cloud means startups can experiment at a greater pace, fail fast with low financial impact, and recover easily. Some of AWS’s focused offerings for cost optimization are:

    • AWS Cost Explorer allows clients to better manage their spending and even set alarms when specific thresholds are reached.
    • AWS Budgets enables customers to set custom budgets to track your cost and usage from the simplest to the most complex use cases.
    • AWS Trusted Advisor provides an online tool that enables startups to reduce costs, increase performance, and improve security by checking their use of infrastructure and services, it also provides suggestions to optimize performance.
    • The AWS Well-Architected Review is a part of the AWS Management Console and reviews the state of a startup’s workloads and compares them to the latest AWS architectural best practices
    • AWS Activate provides qualified startups with a host of benefits, including AWS credits, technical support, and training. Recently, we released the Activate Console, which is designed to support founders through every stage of their journey: from the initial idea to build the minimum viable product to securing the first customer to scaling the business on AWS and beyond. The Activate Console offers founders personalized recommendations on a wide range of training topics that might be of interest based on their AWS usage.

We work with several customers in Pune who in the past year used our solutions to reduce their costs.

Some of our Pune success stories:

Fittr is a tech-enabled, world’s largest, community-first online health and fitness platform headquartered in Pune. Founded by Jitendra Chouksey (CEO), Fittr’s vision is to build a global community offering physical, mental, and emotional well-being solutions. Witnessing exponential growth, Fittr engaged with AWS to reduce costs by 20% – 30% on their monthly usage. AWS enabled them to move to AMD-based EC2 instances and introduced a comprehensive Compute Savings Plan. To ensure the best customer experiences, AWS also helped them adopt AmazonCloudFront under the private pricing agreement, a global content delivery network that makes it easy to deliver websites, videos, apps, and APIs securely at high speeds with low latency. Lastly, Fittr migrated to AWS Session Manager from Bastion Host, to manage to compute instances, edge devices, on-premises servers, and virtual machines. They were aligned to an AWS ‘Premier Consulting Partner’ to run Well-Architected Review (WAR) to optimize their resources.

EarlySalary is India’s largest consumer credit application. Its Credit Suite is a comprehensive credit solution portfolio for the digital-first Indian consumer. It is a platform that provides a one-stop solution to serve all the possible credit requirements of a salaried individual. It includes Instant loans & amp; Salary Advances, Personal loans with a limit of up to 3 years, Free Credit Score, SalaryCard for credit payments on the go, and Buy Now Pay Later in EMIs. EarlySalary operates with a fully digitized and instant decision-making system that allows you to borrow in minutes rather than in days. The company has already disbursed nearly 2.4 million loans worth Rs. 5000 Cr. As the number of users increased, naturally the need for optimizing the infrastructure became a priority. EarlySalary introduced AMD-based EC2 instances for production workloads. Thereafter, adopted a savings plan for computing resources to optimize the operation costs. The next big ticket was their Data Lake setup, which on further analysis and implementation of best practices helped save a further $2000 – $2500 monthly. They were aligned to an AWS ‘Advanced Consulting Partner’ to run Well-Architected Review (WAR) to strengthen their security and cost optimization pillars of AWS Well-Architected Framework.
