PUNE: The 66th Annual Convention of the Deccan Sugar Technologists’ Association (India) will take place in Pune on October 30th. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Government of India would be the Chief Guest for the convention this year. The convention will take place at YASHADA. Considering the current situation only a select few members and guests would be allowed to attend it physically. All others can participate in the convention through an online platform. This was informed by Sohan Shirgaokar, Convener of the Convention Committee, and Shahaji Bhad, President of the Association.
DSTA was founded by Seth Lalchand Hirachand in 1936 to create a forum for knowledge sharing and idea exchange about the new technologies and innovations in the sugar industry so that the latest updates reach the concerned and everyone related to the sugar industry benefits from the same.
The most important part of this convention is the research paper presented by the members of DSTA. Research papers related to fields like engineering, production, agriculture, co-products, and management that directly impact sugar factories and the related segments are invited from the members of the association spread across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. The expert committee at DSTA scrutinizes the papers and the best ones are compiled in the form of a booklet which is unveiled during the convention at the hands of the Chief Guest. The idea to compile these research papers is to bring the latest updates in the sugar industry closer to the members. This year the booklet will have 42 research papers.
Life Time Achievement Awards are presented to the members of DSTA who have made an outstanding contribution to sugar production and allied segments. Secondly, the Industrial excellence awards are also presented to acknowledge noteworthy contributions in the allied industries. Totally 10 awards including both shall be presented during the convention. Best research papers from the compilation of the previous year’s convention are given cash prizes. The Mangal Singh Gold Medal for Best Research Paper shall be presented to M. S. Marathe, former Managing Director of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar factories of India.
Two lectures are also an important part of this annual convention of DSTA. Ethanol Man and the Founder of Praj Industries Dr. Pramod Chaudhari will deliver a lecture on biofuels in the Late S N Gundurao Memorial Lecture Series. Secondly, Dr. A. B. Pandit, Vice-Chancellor, Institute of Chemical Technology will be the speaker in the Late J P Mukherji Memorial lecture during the convention.
