Whether you’re traveling to India for work or for a vacation, you are likely very excited about your upcoming trip. There are so many things about India that make it a special and unique place, online anywhere else in the world. If you are traveling for work, try to free up at least an afternoon or two in your schedule so that you can experience a little of what India has to offer. But regardless of how much time you will have to spend there, there are some things you should know before going. Here are 4 tips for visiting India.
Learn To Haggle
While haggling may not be a common part of shopping where you are from, it is a very normal thing to do in India. Whether you are buying a t-shirt or a plate of food, you should expect to haggle. Sellers will usually quote you a high price and then you are expected to come back at them with a lower offer. Don’t let this overwhelm or intimidate you as this is a normal part of life in India. Once you do it a few times you may even find haggling to be thrilling and you’ll get really good at it after a while!
Expect Hot Weather
The weather in India is typically pretty warm year-round, so no matter what time of year you are planning on going, you should be prepared for high temperatures. That being said, it is good to be prepared for anything so always make sure to also pack a jacket, just in case.
Prepare For Culture Shock
People live a little bit differently in India than they do in most parts of the world and wherever you are from. Many experience culture shock upon first witnessing these differences, so if this is your first visit it is best to be prepared to be a little shocked by some of the things you see. It is important to remember that just because a culture is different from your own doesn’t mean it is not as good.
Carry Toilet Paper
If you are out and about in India and have to use a public restroom, you may be a little displeased to find that toilet paper and soap are not provided in public restrooms. If you pack toilet paper and carry it with you in your purse or backpack, you won’t have to worry about the inconvenience this can cause.
Traveling to India can be a lot of fun, especially if you know before you go what you can expect once you get there. Whatever you do, just don’t let cultural differences prevent you from having a great trip.
