Rayo Vallecano claim the final spot in LaLiga Santander
Rayo Vallecano produced an epic comeback in the LaLiga SmartBank playoff final second leg, overturning a first leg 2-1 deficit by defeating Girona 2-0 away from home. The capital city side even finished the match with 10 men, but held on to win promotion back to LaLiga Santander after two years away.
Sergio Ramos bids farewell to Real Madrid
After 16 years with Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos has said goodbye to Los Blancos. The legendary centre-back leaves the Santiago Bernabéu after 671 official matches, 437 victories, 101 goals and 22 titles. The club held a farewell presentation for the Spanish defender on Thursday.
Barcelona wrap up Memphis
Barcelona have made their fourth signing of the summer, bringing in Dutch forward Memphis Depay. After already acquiring Sergio Agüero, Eric García and Emerson, Barça have now signed Memphis following the expiration of his contract at French side Lyon. Memphis has worked with coach Ronald Koeman before to great effect, back when the current Barça coach was Netherlands boss.
Barcelona unveil their unique new kit
The new Barcelona home shirt has been revealed, with the classic blue and red stripes presented in a unique way that mimics the club crest. Players from the club’s men’s and women’s first teams modelled the new kit for the official launch.
Granada name Robert Moreno as their new coach
Granada have hired their new coach, picking Robert Moreno to replace the departed Diego Martínez. Moreno was assistant to Luis Enrique with Spain and became the caretaker coach of the national team when Luis Enrique had to step aside for personal reasons. Since then, Moreno has also had a stint with Monaco in Ligue 1.
Celta extend Eduardo Coudet
Eduardo Coudet has put pen to paper on a new contract with RC Celta, renewing until 2024. Coudet arrived at the Galician club in November 2020 with the team in the drop zone and led them to an impressive eighth-placed finish. With a full pre-season to work with his players, big things are expected going into 2021/22.
Aïssa Mandi switches Betis for Villarreal
Villarreal have strengthened their back line, signing Algerian international Aïssa Mandi on a free transfer. The centre-back is staying in LaLiga Santander after spending the past five seasons with Real Betis. His new deal with the Yellow Submarine will run until 2025.
Luis del Sol passes away
Spanish football was in mourning on Sunday after the announcement that Luis del Sol has died at the age of 86. The midfielder played for Real Betis and Real Madrid during his playing career, before going on to coach Real Betis on multiple occasions. He is widely considered one of Los Verdiblancos’ all-time legends.
The new LaLiga Santander season will start in mid-August
The 2021/22 LaLiga Santander season is scheduled to begin on the weekend of August 15th, with LaLiga, Spain’s football federation and Spain’s sports ministry having come to an agreement this past week.
Five Stars of the Match at Euro 2020
At the end of each Euro 2020 match, UEFA are giving out their Star of the Match award and, so far, five LaLiga players have been named as the best player in a Euro 2020 match: David Alaba, Gareth Bale, Luka Modrić, Alexander Isak and Jordi Alba.
