Dhawan has IPL Orange Cap in his sights

Dynamic Delhi batsman Shikhar Dhawan is again targeting the coveted Indian Premier League, Orange Cap.

The award for the tournament’s top batsman looks well within his reach in 2021 after he narrowly missed out in last year’s competition.

He fell just 52 runs short of winner KL Rahul in 2020 despite leading Delhi Capitals to the final.

Dhawan also came fourth back in 2019 and looked determined to add his name to the honours list finally.

His positive approach, especially during the powerplay, set him apart last season with a strike rate of 144.73 and an average of 44.14 from his 17 games.

He has already made an excellent start to going one better at IPL 2021.

The left-hander has hit 85 against Chennai and 92 against Punjab to push himself towards the top of the early Orange Cap standings.

He looked in decent form for India in the ODI series against England and has been able to carry that forward into the IPL.

That fast start by the opener has seen his odds slashed in the top tournament batsman market.

He is now the favorite with many IPL betting sites to claim the award come to the end of the tournament. Dhawan started as a 13.0 chance with Mr Play but has now been cut to 2.75.

The win would be his first Orange Cap award and could go a long way to handing Delhi a maiden title as well.

The Capitals have the ability and balance to go far in this year’s tournament.

South African bowling duo Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, the addition of Australia batsman Steve Smith, and England’s Chris Woakes make them a strong outfit.

That also boosts Dhawan’s personal ambition to land the top run-scorer honour.

Meanwhile, it looks like he will again face some stiff competition during another competitive IPL campaign.

Last year’s winner Rahul is already on his heels, as is big-hitting RCB all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Others to make good starts with the bat are Kolkata’s Nitish Rana and Mumbai’s captain Rohit Sharma, who continues to shine for India and the IPL’s five-time champions.
