Here are some of the top social media moments from around Spanish football this week.
LaLiga clubs and players have continued to be active on social media this week, with a host of high-engagement and viral posts doing the rounds. Here’s a quick roundup.
Feeling more alive than ever
Cádiz has come up with various viral social media posts over the course of the season and all eyes were on their accounts once again this week. The LaLiga Santander club created plenty of intrigues after the club published a video in collaboration with ‘The Walking Dead’ showing their stadium deserted at night, only for a zombie-fied Dani Güiza to appear.
A triumphant homecoming at Elche
Fran Escribá has returned to former club Elche as a coach and the side from just outside Alicante celebrated accordingly. The club published memes on both their Spanish and English language accounts, welcoming the much-loved Escriba back, and it seemed to pay off. The team picked up their first LaLiga Santander win in months this weekend, with a 1-0 win over Eibar.
Leganes hit 800,000!
CD Leganes is known as one of the most innovative and original social media presences in LaLiga, and this week the club announced that they’d added 85,000 new followers since September to take the club’s total to over 800,000 despite dropping down a division into LaLiga SmartBank last summer. Famous for their creative and funny matchday posters, Lega has begun producing a host of original new content this year, from minigames to the ‘8-second challenge’ and insider content on matchdays across Spanish, English, and Japanese language channels.
Second time lucky from the spot
Real Betis beat Getafe 1-0 on Friday evening, but the talking point of the night was the two penalties awarded to the side from Seville. First Sergio Canales saw his effort saved before Borja Iglesias stepped up to convert the second for the only goal of the game. They joked about it after the game on Twitter. “Just as well,” wrote Canales. “Next time it’ll go in, we trust you,” Iglesias joked back.
Wishing a club legend a happy retirement
Eibar’s legendary kitman Zapico is retiring. After first being hired by the club in 1969, he is stepping into retirement 52 years later after having worked as a coach, as a delegate, as a director, and as a kitman, his most recent role. Given his half a century of service to the club, Eibar held a special ceremony for Zapico along with their players and also shared several memories on social media. Current and former players posted messages of congratulations on social media as well, including Edu Exposito, Ander Capa, and Raúl Navas.
Standing against LGBTphobia
February 19th marked International Day Against LGBTphobia in Sports and clubs from across LaLiga Santander shared messages of support, calling for discrimination to stop. Some clubs even changed their profile pictures on social media to include the movement’s iconic rainbow colours.
