Here are some of the top social media moments from the past week.
There were some big events over the past week, from Chinese New Year to Valentine’s Day. LaLiga clubs joined in the fun on social media, as well as posting about all the action from the Copa del Rey semi-finals and LaLiga Santander’s Matchday 23. Below comes an outline of some of the best moments from the past seven days.
Celebrating Valentine’s Day
Sunday was Valentine’s Day and several of Spain’s top clubs marked the occasion with social media posts. For example, FC Barcelona shared a video of Jordi Alba making his heart celebration, while Real Betis shared heart emojis with their fans after their Sunday night victory over Villarreal CF.
Fulfilling a childhood dream
Several La Masia graduates have been making their debuts for FC Barcelona this season and the latest was Ilaix Moriba, who played his first LaLiga Santander minutes for the Blaugrana in their 5-1 win over Alavés. For the 18-year-old, this meant playing alongside his childhood idol Lionel Messi. After the game, Moriba shared a ‘How it started, How it’s going’ post on social media, with one photo of himself as a young fan posing with Messi and another of him celebrating a goal with the Argentine legend.
Welcoming back a former coach
Manuel Pellegrini is currently in charge of Real Betis, but some of his greatest LaLiga Santander moments came when he was the coach of Villarreal CF between 2004 and 2009. On Sunday night, he returned to the Estadio de la Cerámica and was warmly welcomed in person and on social media, with Villarreal CF sharing posts in multiple languages.
Wishing followers a happy Chinese New Year
It was Chinese New Year over the weekend and LaLiga clubs posted various messages to celebrate the occasion with their Chinese followers. RCD Espanyol, who has China international Wu Lei in their ranks, shared a video in which their players made decorations and in which Wu Lei and his teammates spoke in Chinese.
Sharing one of the GIFs of the year
A clip from The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show went viral this week, with a GIF of the singer looking lost in a room of mirrors being shared and turned into memes across social media. Sevilla FC joined in the fun, joking about the fact that no other club has more Europa League titles than they do. “Trying to find a club with more Europa League trophies than us,” they wrote as the caption.
